From Merry-Go-Round to Investment Club — The Evolution
Your merry-go-round has been running for years. Is it time to evolve into something more? Here's how groups make the transition.
The merry-go-round is Kenya's simplest savings model: 10 members contribute KES 5,000 each month. Each month, one member takes the full KES 50,000. After 10 months, the cycle restarts. Simple. Effective. Limited.
Why Groups Evolve
The merry-go-round has a ceiling: it doesn't grow wealth. Member A gets KES 50,000 in month 1 and contributes KES 50,000 over 10 months. Net gain: zero (ignoring the time value of money).

An investment club takes those same contributions and creates lasting value: interest from loans, returns from investments, welfare protection. After 10 months, the group has assets — not just a completed rotation.
The Transition
Step 1: Keep the rotation (optional)
Many groups maintain a partial merry-go-round (each member gets KES 20,000) while saving the rest (KES 30,000 per month into the group pool). This satisfies members who value the lump-sum payout while building group capital.
Step 2: Add a loan facility
Instead of waiting for your 'turn,' any member can borrow from the pool and repay with interest. The interest grows the fund for everyone.
Step 3: Add welfare
Contribute an additional KES 500/month to a welfare fund. Now you have insurance too.
Step 4: Start investing
Once the pool reaches KES 100,000+, explore Money Market Funds, Treasury Bills, or land.
The merry-go-round got you started. The investment club builds your future.
